Mississauga Fire said multiple extrications were performed and up to nine people were taken to hospital. One victim, a woman, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said the rest of the injuries are not considered life-threatening.

A black Hyundai was crushed and flipped on its side, lodged between a truck with a bin and a smaller grey vehicle.

A video shared to social media shows the bus crush several vehicles in its path before mounting the curb.

The bus came to a stop on the sidewalk and had a smashed windshield. There was a crushed traffic sign under its right front wheel.

Other vehicles damaged included a Beck taxi, a blue Hyundai sedan and a white Toyota SUV.

“The transit bus was the first initial contact for the collision and then there was a chain reaction afterwards,” said Const. Sarah Patten, adding the female bus driver was taken to hospital.

No charges have been laid yet.

“We were standing at the red light in the middle lane behind the dump truck and the cars came from the right,” said witness Nidhi Bhambri, who was driving the white Toyota.

She added the crash was “very terrifying” to watch and said she was unhurt.

“I can’t imagine what these people (went through). I hope they are okay.”

Drivers were advised to use alternate routes as police closed Derry Rd. in both directions for the investigation.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie tweeted: “Devastated to learn about the horrific 8-vehicle crash in #Mississauga. My thoughts and prayers are with all those involved, including the individual who tragically lost their life and those with life-threatening injuries.”

She added: “We stand together as a community to offer our support and strength.”
